Introduction To Sindhi

Sindhis belongs originally to the region of SIND which is in the lap of the great Indus valley. This land is situated on the banks of the greatest river on the earth – The SINDHU RIVER- because of which the inhabitants of this area are called SINDHIS. To a Sindhi in India today, this land is one of the memories & nostalgia.

For a Sindhi generation born, after partition, in India, SIND possibly does not mean anything because they have not seen the land where their forefathers lived once upon a time –a land that gave them the title of being called a SINDHI. In this scenario it is more so important, that the younger generation should be acquainted with certain facts about the SACRED LAND- SIND.

In ancient days, SIND was known as "SINDHU SAUVEER". The total area of SIND province is 5700 Sq.Miles. It is said that even the greatest Treasure house of knowledge "THE VEDAS" were first recited on the banks of River SINDHU. The greatest known earliest civilization "Mohen JO DARO" was located in SIND. And this civilization is atleast 2600 years old before Christ.

The river SINDHU (INDUS) originates in Mansarovar lake in the Himalayas. The total length of SINDHU River from Mansarovar to Keti Bunder is 1700 miles. Five rivers of Punjab namely- Bias, Chenub, Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej enjoin the SINDHU river to make it mighty Ocean like SINDHU River is compared to the NILE RIVER of Egypt, so also SINDHU too is a great sustainer of SINDHU DESH.
