History of the federation

Sindhi's after partitioned had settled in all major towns and cities of South India. As a service minded community Sindhi's had established various institutions in the respective places where they had settled. A Darbar/Community Centre, a Medical Centre and a Educational Institution where the common activities which were carried out.

Yet there was a sense of yearning for doing something more for the community. The Sindhi's met to discuss the various issues affecting them and found that they would be better served if they got together under a common umbrella. It was felt that a parent body or an apex organization should be set up, which would bring all Sindh's together. The idea was to bring together a cohesiveness, a commonalty of purpose and most important the creation of an Institution whose guidelines would be honoured not only by its members but by the Sindhi Community at large. With this specific objective the representatives of various Sindhi Institutions from the four southern states of Tamilnadu, Karnataka, Andhra and Kerala came together for the first time on 12th September 1987 at Chennai.

A monumental decision was taken by the heads of the organizations to form a Federation of the various sindhi institutions. The purpose, aims and objectives of the federation were manifold – the main theme being to bring unity amongst sindhi's and alleviate their suffering and suggest ways and means of improving the economic, social and cultural condition of the community.

In the year 1988, the Sindhi Federation of South India was formally inaugurated and on 1st September 1988 the Federation was formally constituted and registered as a Society under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act. The Federation has since then been holding its meetings in different cities of South India. At these meetings thought provoking discussions were held and far sighted resolutions were passed. These Resolutions encompass the problems which affect the community.

If one were to highlight the achievements of the Federation, they would be:

  • R Universal acceptance of sharing marriage expenses
  • R Inspiring each other to establish Educational Institutions
  • R Provide a mechanism for addressing Marital Issues
  • R Recognizing the services rendered by various Individuals to the community
  • R Creating an effective network of Sindhi Organizations

There is a lot that is desired to be done and we all hope and trust that this coming together will bring in the results.
